How Long Does It Take to Heal After LANAP Laser Treatment?

cerfs landing 300x94 (1)

Most patients heal in about one to two weeks.

What to Expect After Laser Gum Surgery

Most‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ patients who visit Lema Dental Clinic in Istanbul are usually very scared. Conventional gum surgery meant cutting, stitching, and a long downtime which seemed like a never-ending story. However, the introduction of LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) has completely changed the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌story.

The fact is that traditional surgery resembles a complete overhaul while LANAP is a very targeted upgrade. In the past, we did everything to fix the problem, but now we only destroyed the infection “debris” by the use of light energy and the healthy tissue is preserved.

Anyway, how soon can you get back to your daily routine?

The First 24 Hours: The “Quiet Phase”

Right after your treatment with Professor Doctor Coşkun Yıldız or Dentist Polen Akkılıç and their team, you will feel like you haven’t had surgery. You won’t have the feeling of your gums being pulled by stitches or seeing open wounds.

In the first few hours, the body forms a “gel clot.” This clot is like a biological seal or natural bandage, and it serves as a base where new gum attachment will happen. If you disturb this seal, you will disturb your healing. Hence, we strictly recommend a liquid diet on the first day.

Why the LANAP Clot is Different?

After surgery, to keep the gums against the tooth, we use silk or synthetic threads. The laser with LANAP forms a sticky, fibrin-rich clot that serves as a super-glue of sorts. It’s fragile, yet very effective at warding off bacterial invasion.

Days 2 to 7: Stability and Soft Foods

The most prominent thing that our patients from Turkey observe is the absence of pain. Most patients use only over-the-counter Ibuprofen to alleviate the discomfort. However, the idea that you should only go out and eat a steak because you are feeling well is wrong.

Here is what we observe in the clinic during the first week:

  • Tissue Color Changes: Gums may become white or gray. Don’t worry. It is not an infection; it is the “matrix” of the healing tissue.
  • Light Pain: Slight throbbing is normal as the blood flow increases to the area to facilitate the repair.
  • The “No Brush” Rule: A special mouth rinse instead of a toothbrush will be used to clean the treated area.

The Long-Term Horizon: 3 to 12 Months

Bone‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ will take a long time before it starts regenerating and eventually the healing will be complete. The jawbone is like the foundation of a building. It is impossible to rush the setting of concrete . Although your gums will look “normal” in 10 to 14 days, the biological “re-attachment” of the tissue lasts for several ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌months.

Professor Doctor Coşkun Yıldız often notes that the success of LANAP isn’t just about the technology; it’s about the patient’s commitment to the post-op “liquid and soft food” phase. Because the laser stimulates the body’s own stem cells, we are essentially asking your body to perform a small miracle of regeneration.

Dentist Polen Akkılıç and her team emphasize that LANAP is a game-changer for international patients visiting Lema Dental Clinic. Since the recovery is so much faster, patients can enjoy the beauty of Istanbul shortly after their procedure, provided they stick to the recommended “soft food” tour of Turkish cuisine!

FAQ: Direct Answers from Your Surgeons

Can I be at work the very next day?

Of course. Most of the patients of Lema Dental Clinic can continue their normal routines within a day. You won’t have the swelling or be unable to speak that are the common signs of traditional surgery.

How soon can I eat “real” food again?

Generally, we have you on liquids and then slowly introduce the idea of “mushy” foods (such as yogurt or mashed potatoes) after the 3rd day. Healing allows us to have pasta, fish and other soft foods in the 2nd week. Seeds, popcorn, or crunchy chips should be avoided for about a month.

Does the treatment involve pain?

You are completely numb during the treatment so that you do not feel any pain. Then most patients describe their gums feeling mildly sunburned, almost like the skin feeling after it has been exposed to the sun for too long. It’s quite different and much less painful than cuts.

What is the reason for my not brushing the treated area?

Brushing and flossing too early after the treatment would be the same as peeling off the scab before the skin under it has healed. The “fibrin seal” we want to allow to continue without any disturbance so that the gum can gently and effectively re-attach to the tooth root.

Do I have to take antibiotics?

Most probably you will have to as we usually prescribe a course of antibiotics. Although the laser kills almost three-quarters of bacteria, we still want to make sure your mouth stays a “clean construction site” while the new tissue is being ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌formed.
