Domestic vs Imported Implants: FDA & CE Importance

cerfs landing 300x94 (1)

FDA and CE certifications guarantee implant safety and quality standards.

This‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ is by far the most frequent query we encounter during consultations at Lema Dental Clinic in Turkey. A patient sits down, looks at the treatment plan, and asks:

“Should I choose a local or an imported brand? Are they really different?”

It is quite understandable that you hesitate. It is a choice of a medical device that will stay in your jawbone for years. Still, this is the truth we see in the clinic: The debate “Imported vs. Local” is sometimes a mere distraction. A screw’s origin is much less important than its engineering.

Whether an implant is made in Switzerland, Germany, the USA, or Turkey is less important than the two vital acronyms: FDA and CE.

The “Passport” of Your Implant: Why FDA & CE Are Crucial

If you compare a dental implant to the engine of a powerful car, you will not trust an engine just because it was made in a country. You trust it because it has passed very strict safety tests, the car was subjected to a crash test, etc.

This is precisely the mission of the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and CE (Conformité Européenne) certifications.

  • FDA Approval: This is the highest level of worldwide recognition. It signifies that the implant system has passed the rigid safety and efficacy criteria set by the U.S. for use in the country.
  • CE Marking: This indicates that the product complies with the safety, health, and environmental protection standards of the European Economic Area.

Simply put, at Lema Dental Clinic, we follow only one philosophy: Any implant system without these international certifications is not considered for our shelves. Professor Doctor Coşkun Yıldız points out that bone and titanium get biologically integrated only through the clean titanium surface at the microscopic level. By having FDA and CE certificates, you make sure that the surface purity is the same in every batch.

The “Imported” Label: Myth vs. Reality

Some people think that anything “foreign” is automatically better. But if you dissect this further, you will see that “imported” just means crossing a border. There are bad imported implants as well as very great local ones.

Nonetheless, the “Big Three” or upper-tier implants (mostly from Switzerland, Germany, or the USA) have something that other brands lack: clinical history. Straumann or Nobel Biocare, for example, are research-based brands and have a vast data pool of their products’ performances on the human body over 15, 20, or 25 years.

Dentist Polen Akkılıç and the rest of the team sometimes use this analogy with patients: In buying a premium imported brand, you are indirectly buying a 30-year R&D record that titanium will not let you down.

The Rise of Turkish Domestic Implants

Dental manufacturing in Turkey has gained global recognition. We now have excellent Turkish domestic implants that are FDA and CE certified, and these can be really good and affordable alternatives to patients with normal bone density.

The difference lies in the flexibility most of the time. Premium foreign brands generally have more options in terms of sizes, angles, and prosthetic connections. This way, a surgeon like Professor Doctor Coşkun Yıldız has more or less “tools in his toolbox” when dealing with complex cases—such as extremely severe bone atrophy or immediate loading (implants placed right after extraction).

Comparing the Options: A Quick Guide

There is a simple comparison table below that indicates the functional differences between these groups.

Which One Suits You Best?

In the event you are young and live a long life or your case necessitates complex reconstruction (like All-on-4), then a premium brand with a lifetime warranty and global parts availability is often the best “insurance policy” you can buy for a mouth. If in 10 years you move to Canada or Japan and need a screw tightening, you want to know that the local dentist will recognize the brand and have the tool to operate.

For single-tooth replacements in healthy bone, a certified domestic brand is more than capable of giving you a good result. Yet, we never let go of the certification. When you come to Lema Dental Clinic, the implant we put in you is 100% traceable, insured, and guaranteed.

FAQ: Your Questions, Answered

Can I mix and match different implant brands in my mouth?

Technically, yes, but we usually advise against it for the same arch (upper or lower jaw). Keeping the system uniform makes future maintenance much easier. If you already have an implant from a different brand, just let us know. We can usually work around it or restore it if you bring your implant passport.

Why are imported implants so much more expensive?

Firstly, you are paying for the R&D (Research and Development). Straumann and similar brands allocate huge amounts of money every year to finding ways to make your bone heal faster by perfecting the surface of the screw (a hydrophilic surface). However, domestic brands have the technology on a standard level: they are solid but not cutting-edge.

Will a domestic implant fall out sooner?

Not necessarily. If the implant has FDA and CE certificates and the surgeon is one who has skills comparable to Professor Doctor Coşkun Yıldız, then the success rate for standard cases is most likely going to be pretty similar. Brand failure in this case is generally due to poor oral hygiene or smoking, rather than the brand of the screw.

How do I know which brand you are actually putting in my mouth?

We are 100% transparent about it. When you come to Turkey for surgery, we will give you an “Implant Passport” or ID card so that you know for sure which brand, serial, and lot numbers of the implant you have in your jaw. You can verify its authenticity online if you want to.

Does the brand matter for the crown (the tooth part) too?

Brands of implants determine the connection type but the crown itself (Zirconia or E.max) is actually produced by our lab. Dentist Polen Akkılıç guarantees that no matter which screw brand is hidden in the bone, the visual tooth will be produced for impeccable appearance and correct ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌bite.
