It is quite understandable that you hesitate. It is a choice of a medical device that will stay in your jawbone for years. Still, this is the truth we see in the clinic: The debate “Imported vs. Local” is sometimes a mere distraction. A screw’s origin is much less important than its engineering.
Whether an implant is made in Switzerland, Germany, the USA, or Turkey is less important than the two vital acronyms: FDA and CE.
The “Passport” of Your Implant: Why FDA & CE Are Crucial
If you compare a dental implant to the engine of a powerful car, you will not trust an engine just because it was made in a country. You trust it because it has passed very strict safety tests, the car was subjected to a crash test, etc.
This is precisely the mission of the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and CE (Conformité Européenne) certifications.
- FDA Approval: This is the highest level of worldwide recognition. It signifies that the implant system has passed the rigid safety and efficacy criteria set by the U.S. for use in the country.
- CE Marking: This indicates that the product complies with the safety, health, and environmental protection standards of the European Economic Area.
Simply put, at Lema Dental Clinic, we follow only one philosophy: Any implant system without these international certifications is not considered for our shelves. Technically, yes, but we usually advise against it for the same arch (upper or lower jaw). Keeping the system uniform makes future maintenance much easier. If you already have an implant from a different brand, just let us know. We can usually work around it or restore it if you bring your implant passport.
Firstly, you are paying for the R&D (Research and Development). Straumann and similar brands allocate huge amounts of money every year to finding ways to make your bone heal faster by perfecting the surface of the screw (a hydrophilic surface). However, domestic brands have the technology on a standard level: they are solid but not cutting-edge.
Not necessarily. If the implant has FDA and CE certificates and the surgeon is one who has skills comparable to Professor Doctor Coşkun Yıldız, then the success rate for standard cases is most likely going to be pretty similar. Brand failure in this case is generally due to poor oral hygiene or smoking, rather than the brand of the screw.
