Mastering the Water Flosser with Braces in Turkey

A water flosser helps braces patients in Turkey clean around brackets and wires effectively every day.

What‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Makes Water Flossers Indispensable for People with Braces?

Giving braces is a remarkable occasion. Braces do symbolize your commitment to a beautiful smile ahead. However, they also signify the start of a daily struggle against food debris. If you have ever tried to slide regular dental floss between a complex wire-bracket system, you can agree that it is probably like attempting to thread a needle when your hands are covered with mitts.

In fact, conventional flossing with braces is a germy chore. At the same time, at Lema Dental Clinic in Turkey, we do witness the case of gum swelling quite regularly due to patients failing to handle the “floss threader” routine any longer.

Introducing the Orthodontic Obstacle Course

To‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ help visualize it better, think of your braces as tiny scaffolds on each tooth. Of course, they work great for alignment but, at the same time, they really help plaque get comfortable by allowing it to form “nooks and crannies” where it can reside. If you don’t clean your braces, bacteria will get out of control in those spots and you will get white spots (decalcification) or ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌gingivitis.

Prof. Dr. Coşkun Yıldız constantly emphasizes that, besides the movement of the teeth, the key to a successful orthodontic treatment lies in the health of the tissue which supports the teeth. It is not only in the case of gum problems that the aesthetic aspect of a nice smile is compromised.

Water Flossing Makes the Difference

Different from just another stylish device in a dentist’s or patient’s equipment, a water irrigator functions just like a power cleaning tool for one’s oral hygiene. It simply makes use of a focused jet of pulsating water to loosen and remove food particles and other debris from teeth and gums spots where even toothbrush and string floss have difficulties going in.

However, what we really should do is break down in more detail exactly how this aspect of our patients being in Turkey matters the most. Dentist Polen Akkılıç and her crew noticed that, as compared to those patients that floss string removers, patients who perform oral hygiene with water flossers require considerably less “chair time” during their regular adjustments. The water can get around each bracket and flush out the “biofilm,” which is a glue-like layer formed by bacteria that are invisible to the naked eye and hold down food.

The Benefits at a Glance:

  • Speed: The whole mouth can be cleaned in no more than about 1 to 1.5 minutes.
  • Gentleness: It doesn’t gingerly, by means of string floss, inflame the gums.
  • Reach: The orthodontic tips are especially made to get behind the archwire. ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌

Expert‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Tips for Using a Water Flosser with Braces

The water flosser question still stands: how to use it without your bathroom mirror looking like a crime scene?! Here is the “Lema Protocol” which we share with our patients:

  • Lean Over the Sink: Drop your head down and let the water come out of your mouth naturally into the sink.
  • Start Low: Always start with the lowest pressure setting. Think of it as a soft garden hose spray rather than a very powerful pressure cleaner for your driveway. You may increase the pressure when your gums get accustomed.
  • Trace the Gumline: Don’t just rinse randomly. Give the edge of the gum a nice following, stopping for a bit in the gaps between the teeth and around each bracket.
  • Use Lukewarm Water: If your teeth are sensitive, cold water can seem like a sudden shock for your body. Warm water is far more pleasant.

Common Questions from Our Patients

Can a water flosser replace traditional floss completely?

The reality is, a water flosser is very effective for braces, but few patients can still get a benefit from using string floss once or twice a week to “scrape” the sides of the teeth. Nevertheless, for day-to-day maintenance with braces, the water flosser is our number one choice.

Won’t the water pressure cause my brackets to fall off?

Absolutely not. Your brackets are glued with a medical-grade adhesive that is capable of holding up to the forces of chewing. A jet of water—even on the highest setting—won’t move them.

My gums bleed when I use it. Should I discontinue?

According to our experience in clinic, bleeding is typically a sign that the patient already had gingivitis since these areas were not cleaned well enough. Continue using it on the lowest setting. Generally, after a week of regular cleaning, the bleeding will cease as the tissue heals.

Am I allowed to add mouthwash to the water flosser?

Definitely! Adding a bit of antimicrobial mouthwash to the water tank can give the feeling of an extra “shock” freshness along with an increased bacteria-killing effect. Make sure to clean the device with normal water later to avoid the accumulation of residue.

When is the most appropriate time of day for me to water floss?

We suggest performing it just before going to sleep. This way you make certain that there are no food particles between your teeth and under your wires when you sleep, which is the time bacteria cause the most ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌harm.
