Remove adhesive dentures gently by rinsing with warm water and slowly loosening them with care.

These‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ conversations are hardly new to us. Almost every time, we have a patient in our chair who is not happy with their situation. They pose a simple question: “Doctor, do I really have to glue my teeth every single day?”

The truth is, adapting to partial dentures is a gradual process. It is like putting something foreign into your mouth. Besides, your mouth happens to be a highly sensitive area. But let’s focus on the dental paste. Are you really going to need it every day? Is it merely a quick remedy? Or does it point to a more serious underlying issue?

At Lema Dental Clinic in Turkey, one of our core beliefs is that crystal-clear facts bring peace of mind. What follows is our observation of the clinical situation and what you simply have to be aware of concerning partial dentures and dental adhesives.

The Anatomy of a Perfect Fit

To get an idea of how well a partial denture fits, think of a tailor-made suit. A well-made one fits your body shape like a glove. A partial denture is supported by your natural teeth and gums,s just like your body is supported by your skeleton.

Typically, a brand-new and properly made partial denture will not require paste at all. The metal or acrylic clips are designed to gently hold your natural teeth. They keep the denture in place firmly. However, the human body is constantly changing. The jawbone is a good example. It tends to shrink when the teeth are missing. It is like the soil that is washed off the roots of a tree. The denture that fit perfectly a year ago may not be well fitting today due to changes in your bone structure.

People start to use paste at this point.

When Does Paste Enter the Picture?

Professor Doctor Coşkun Yıldız mentions a very straightforward clinical observation: “If you rely on denture paste too much, you are actually shouting for help from your gums!”

Most patients resort to adhesive for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Security: They do not want to have the embarrassment of their teeth slipping when they laugh or talk.
  • Sealant: They want to prevent food particles from getting under the denture.
  • Compensation: The denture no longer fits due to bone loss, and they are trying to hold up the old denture.

Using a little paste for a major event is fine. But it should be just a supporting aid, not the main means. If you are applying thick layers of paste all day long just to have the teeth, then it is time to face reality.

5 Frequently Asked Questions (From the Doctor’s Desk)

Is it safe to swallow a little bit of the paste every day?

Doctor’s Answer: Yes, but try not to do it. Most of the new pastes are safe and zinc-free. If you swallow small amounts, it is not harmful. However, if the paste goes out and you swallow it all day, then your denture needs fixing.

I just got my partials yesterday,y and they feel weird. Is it okay to use glue?

Doctor’s Answer: No, please wait. Your mouth is getting used to the new teeth during the first few weeks. You will produce more saliva. These things will make the mouth feel slippery. You need to give your facial muscles time to get used to the new teeth before resorting to paste.

Will the paste damage my real teeth

Doctor’s Answer: The paste will not cause tooth decay. Not brushing the teeth properly after using the paste is the culprit. Paste is sticky, ky, and it captures plaque. If you fail to remove the paste from your teeth and denture clips, your teeth may suffer from decay.

How do I get this sticky film off my gums during the night?

Doctor’s Answer: It is indeed difficult! Do not use a hard brush to scrub aggressively, since you would hurt your gums. A better technique is to rinse your mouth with warm salt water and gently wipe the gums with a wet and soft cloth.

I am fed up with my partial. What are my other options?

Doctor’s Answer: It is a conversation worth having. If wearing and removing partial dentures every night is your main problem,m then dental implants should be considered. To get things working, a couple of implants will lock the teeth firmly. So, you will have teeth in the morning and at night time and no more glue wastage forever.
