Treatments
What we do
Seventeen pages: eleven procedures, and six guides to the things patients ask about before they decide. Each one says what it is, which version of it applies to you, and what happens on the day.
Procedures
11
- Dental implantsA titanium root placed in the jaw, and a tooth built on top of it. It is the only replacement that becomes part of the bone rather than resting on it — which is why it is the one that stops the jaw from shrinking.Surgery1–4 hours
- The Hollywood smileNot one procedure but a plan: shade, shape, alignment and gum line decided together, drawn to your face, and shown to you before a single tooth is touched.Chair time1–4 hours
- Root canal treatmentThe infected pulp is taken out, the canals are cleaned and shaped, and the space is sealed. It is the procedure that keeps a tooth you would otherwise lose — which is why it is worth more than the implant that would replace it.VisitsOne, usually
- Dental veneersA thin shell bonded to the front of the tooth. It changes the shape, the shade and the line of a smile while taking less of the tooth than any other covering — which is the whole argument for it.VisitsOne or two
- Teeth whiteningA peroxide gel lifts the stain out of the enamel — in one session in the chair, or over a fortnight in trays at home. It is the only cosmetic treatment on this list that removes nothing from the tooth. In the chair45–90 minutes
- Dental crownsA cap over the whole tooth, made to your bite and cemented on. Where a filling is patching and a veneer is facing, a crown is what holds a tooth together once there is not enough of it left to hold itself.VisitsTwo
- Dental bridgesA run of joined crowns that carries a replacement tooth across a gap, held by the teeth on either side. It is fixed, it is quick, and it costs you something the implant does not: the two teeth that carry it.VisitsTwo
- BracesBrackets and a wire, moving teeth a fraction of a millimetre at a time. It is the slowest treatment the clinic offers and the only one that straightens teeth without taking anything off them.Treatment18 months–3 years
- Tooth extractionTaking a tooth out is the last answer, not the quick one. It is the right answer when the tooth is beyond saving, when it is taking the bone around it down with it, or when it is in the way of the teeth that are staying.Appointment20–60 minutes
- Flexible denturesA partial denture in a nylon-based material that bends slightly instead of resisting, and holds on with gum-coloured clasps instead of metal ones. Lighter to wear, and invisible in a way the old kind never was.VisitsTwo
- Clear alignersA series of clear trays, each one a fraction of a millimetre different from the last. They are removable, they are hard to see, and they are the only way to straighten teeth without being in the chair every month.Worn20–22 hours a day
Guides
Not treatments. Answers to what patients ask before they choose one.
- After an extractionThe extraction takes twenty minutes and the healing takes a fortnight. Almost everything that goes wrong in that fortnight goes wrong in the first twenty-four hours, and almost all of it is preventable. After treatment
- Crooked teethThere are two ways to fix a crooked tooth: move it, or cover it. One takes months and costs you nothing of the tooth; the other takes a week and is permanent. Almost everything worth knowing is in that trade.Which treatment
- Dental X-raysMost of a tooth is out of sight — the roots, the bone around them, and the decay that starts between teeth where no mirror reaches. Imaging is how a plan gets made about the part nobody can see.Diagnosis
- Mouthguards and night guardsA moulded shield worn over the teeth — at night against grinding, on the pitch against a blow. It is the least expensive appliance in the clinic and the one that most often prevents the most expensive work.Protection
- Children’s teethBaby teeth fall out, which is why they get neglected — and they hold the space, guide the adult teeth in behind them, and teach a child whether the dentist is a frightening place or a dull one.For parents
- Sinus liftA graft placed between the upper jaw and the floor of the sinus above it, to build the height an implant needs. It is the procedure that turns "there is not enough bone" into a plan. Before an implant
