What it is

A Hollywood smile is a smile makeover, and the word makeover is doing real work: it is a plan rather than a procedure. Whitening, veneers, crowns and gum contouring are the tools; which of them you need, on which teeth, and in what order is the decision — and it is made against your face, not against a shade guide.

That is why the design comes before the dentistry. The teeth are measured and photographed, the new smile is drawn digitally, and you see it and approve it before anything is prepared. Nothing irreversible happens on the strength of a conversation.

A smile that suits the person is worth more than a smile that matches a chart. The design is the treatment; the rest is execution.

Which one you need

Whitening alone
Where the shape and the alignment are already right, clinical whitening is the whole answer — and it is the one route that removes nothing from the tooth.
Teeth that are sound but stained
Veneers
A thin porcelain facing bonded to the front of the tooth. It takes the least enamel of the two covering options, so it is the first thing considered when the tooth underneath is healthy.
Sound teeth, wrong shape or shade
Crowns
A full cover rather than a facing. More of the tooth is prepared, which is a cost — and the reason it is used where the tooth needs the protection anyway.
Teeth already damaged, filled or root-treated
Gum contouring
Reshaping the gum line so the teeth read at their real proportions. Often a few millimetres, and often what makes the difference the veneers alone would not.
A smile that shows more gum than tooth
Alignment first
Where the teeth are crowded or rotated, moving them with aligners or braces comes first. It adds months and it is sometimes the honest answer: grinding a crooked tooth into line costs tooth.

Questions

How many teeth is a Hollywood smile?

Usually the teeth that show when you smile — commonly eight to ten on top, and often the same below. The number comes from your own smile line, and there is no reason to treat a tooth nobody sees.

Does it hurt?

Preparation is done under local anaesthetic. Teeth can be sensitive for a few days afterwards, particularly to cold, and that settles. If a tooth needed root treatment first, that is its own procedure with its own answer.

How long does it last?

Porcelain veneers and crowns are usually quoted at ten to fifteen years and often outlast that. What decides it is the same as for a natural tooth: hygiene, grinding, and whether the gum stays healthy.

Will it look fake?

Only if it is designed that way. The shade and the shape are your choices, and the temporaries are there so you can live with the decision for a few days before it is made permanent.

Can I do it in one trip?

Usually yes — five to seven days covers design, preparation and fitting. What extends it is anything that has to happen first: alignment, a root canal, or gum treatment.
